Hello, my name is Sara Basnet Bokhim. I am currently a counselor-in-training at the Texas Counseling Center, under the supervision of Cynthia L. Rojas, MA, LPC. I am pursuing a master’s degree in science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Texas A&M University, Kingsville. This program has equipped me with a strong foundation in counseling theories and practical techniques.
I am originally from India. Being multilingual, I communicate fluently in several languages. My mother tongue is Nepali, and I also speak Hindi, which is widely used in India, as well as Bengali and Urdu. My multicultural background has provided me with a unique perspective on the importance of cultural sensitivity and understanding in counseling.
As a counselor-in-training and aspiring mental health professional, I have a deep passion for helping others and am committed to creating a non-judgmental and inclusive environment where individuals feel safe to explore their vulnerabilities and emotions. Emphasizing cultural sensitivity in my advocacy work is a cornerstone of my approach. I understand that everyone comes from a unique background with their own set of experiences, values, and challenges.
Before counseling, I dedicated seventeen enriching years of my life as an early childhood educator, a role that shaped my understanding and skills in engaging with individuals from diverse backgrounds and experiences. My experience of working with both children and adults has taught me to cultivate an environment where they feel listened to and understood, regardless of their age and circumstances. I believe that empathy and understanding are crucial in forming meaningful connections, whether with children, teenagers, or adults.
My approach is based on client-centered therapy, which aims to make clients feel genuinely heard, understood, and accepted. Additionally, focusing on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) helps clients develop healthier coping strategies and reshape their responses to various life situations.
In my free time, I enjoy taking long walks, gardening, and spending quality time with my family. I also actively volunteer with the Nepalese Association of Houston, where I participate in community service projects and attend cultural events.
